Low-power IoT communication technologies developed by the Korea Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) have been selected as international standards.

Korea has secured new international standards related to the Internet of Things (IoT), which is one of the core technologies shaping the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The Korea Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) announced on Dec. 20 that three of its “low power IoT communication technologies” have been selected as international standards by the International Telecommunication Union Organization (ITU) and the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).

ETRI’s technology enables the use of ultra-small IoT devices in the situation where power is not sufficient. It sends data by decreasing data consumption. In addition, it supports various communication technologies such as Bluetooth and near field communication (NFC), which were previously available only by Wi-Fi.

The newly selected NFC-based IPv6 communication technology passed the interoperability test held by the European Telecommunication Standards Institute (ETSI) in 2016, and it was introduced as an excellent technology at the Asia Pacific Network Information Center (APNIC).

ETRI expects the international standard technology to be widely used in various IoT service environments such as smart home, smart building, and smart factory.

Meanwhile, ETRI standard research headquarters was vice chair of ITU-T SG20, leading the international standardization for various ICT technologies such as wireless power transmission, smart greenhouse, block chain application and smart health.
